Research project

New 7TM Receptor signaling mechanisms controlling chemotaxis in Dictyostelium.

Bio

Hello! My name is Helena and I am working on discovering G-protein independent signaling partners involved in chemotaxis in Dictyostelium discoidum, which functions as our model system for human immune cells. I'm very excited to begin working on this project because my undergraduate research was focused on ultrafast spectroscopy of individual photoactive proteins with the ultimate goal of creating optogenetic tools, and now I am looking forward to studying protein signaling interactions in a broader biological context. I obtained my Bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Stony Brook University in NY in May 2020 before moving down to Tucson to begin my PhD in the same field. When I'm not in the lab, you can find me rock climbing, playing board games, and trying out new recipes.
